The Humbug Dascyllus (Dascyllus aruanus) is one of those fish you'll recognize immediately. Three crisp black vertical bars on a white body make it unmistakable among the reef crowd. It's found across a wide stretch of the Indo-Pacific, where it lives in tight association with branching corals like Acropora, darting into the branches at the first sign of trouble. In the wild, these fish form loose social groups, and that colonial nature carries over into the aquarium, though not always peacefully. The Humbug has a reputation for aggression that punches well above its size, and established individuals will harass newcomers, smaller fish, and pretty much anyone they decide they don't like that day. This is worth taking seriously when planning tankmates. Docile or slow-moving fish tend to come off worse. That said, they are genuinely hardy, tolerating a range of reef conditions that would stress more delicate species, which is part of why they've been a staple of the hobby for decades. They're rated intermediate rather than beginner largely because of the temperament management involved, not because the fish itself is fragile. Given compatible tankmates and a reef setup with plenty of structure, they settle in and become bold, active residents.
