Yellow Tetra

The yellow tetra (Hyphessobrycon bifasciatus) is a small characin native to coastal river drainages along Brazil's Atlantic slope, ranging from Espírito Santo down through Rio Grande do Sul and into the upper Paraná basin. In the wild it occupies the mid-water column, moving in active shoals, and this behavior carries straight into the aquarium. One of the more intriguing things about this species is a condition observed in some individuals where the body scales take on a metallic gold sheen. Whether this is triggered by a parasitic infection or something else entirely isn't yet settled science, but affected fish show no signs of stress and appear to live out normal, healthy lives. Identification comes down to a few reliable markers: two distinct humeral spots just behind the gill plate, with the forward one being the more prominent, and the absence of any peduncle blotch or elongated dorsal fin in males. Despite being tagged as aggressive in some records, most keepers find this fish perfectly manageable in a well-chosen community. It does best in groups of eight or more, and pairing it with similarly sized characins, smaller catfishes, or peaceful mid-sized cichlids brings out its natural schooling behavior. An egg-scatterer with no parental instincts, it can be bred by experienced keepers willing to set up a dedicated spawning tank.
