Found only in the forest pools near Vinces in coastal Ecuador, this obscure small tetra, Hyphessobrycon ecuadoriensis, occupies one of the more restricted ranges of any fish in the characid family. Its type locality is a shaded, likely soft and slightly acidic environment typical of lowland tropical forest waterways, and recreating that kind of calm, dimly lit setup will bring out the best in this species. In the aquarium it behaves as you would expect from a small peaceful characin. Schooling with its own kind and posing no threat to similarly sized tankmates. Like most shoaling tetras, it genuinely needs the company of its own species, so a group rather than a pair is the right approach. The care level is listed as intermediate, which likely reflects the challenge of sourcing good stock and dialing in water quality rather than any particularly demanding behavior. This is not a species you will find at every local fish store, and hobbyists who track one down should treat that as an opportunity to document a poorly understood fish. Published information on this species is thin, which makes firsthand observation from hobbyists genuinely valuable.
