The serpae tetra (Hyphessobrycon eques) is one of those fish that divides opinion in the hobby. Gorgeous in a well-managed group, but capable of making life miserable for tankmates when conditions aren't right. Native to the Amazon, Guaporé, and Paraguay river basins of South America, it tends to inhabit slow-moving or still waters, often hanging near the surface among emergent plant stems. In terms of looks, it's a deep-bodied, vivid red fish with a distinctive dark shoulder spot and a black-edged dorsal fin. And selectively bred variants including long-finned and metallic strains are also widely available in the trade. The reputation for fin-nipping is real, but it's largely a numbers game. A group of 12 or more keeps the fish focused on their own internal squabbles and social hierarchy rather than your other fish, and males actually display more intense color when competing with rivals. That said, this species is genuinely unsuitable with slow, shy, or long-finned tankmates. Think twice before pairing them with bettas, fancy livebearers, or most cichlids. Comparably sized, active characids from similar South American biotopes tend to be the safest companions. As an omnivore that accepts most prepared foods readily, feeding is straightforward, though mealtimes can get chaotic.
