The minor tetra (Hyphessobrycon minor) is a small characin from the Essequibo River basin in Guyana, South America, and it remains genuinely uncommon in the aquarium trade. Which is a shame, because it ticks a lot of boxes for a community tank resident. Like most tetras in its size range, it carries the classic compact, laterally compressed body shape and likely sports the lateral markings typical of the Hyphessobrycon group, though detailed color descriptions in available sources are thin. What is clear is that it behaves like a typical peaceful community fish, making it a reasonable choice for beginner keepers who come across it. That said, it can get a little rowdy within its own group and has a tendency to nip at tankmates with long, flowing fins. So ribbon-finned fish like angelfish or fancy bettas are best kept elsewhere. Keeping it in a proper shoal should help distribute any squabbling and bring out more natural behavior. The Essequibo drainage is a blackwater-influenced system, so a planted setup with some leaf litter or driftwood would suit this fish well and is likely to show off whatever coloration it carries.
