The rosy tetra (Hyphessobrycon rosaceus) is a small characin from the river basins of Guyana and Suriname, where it inhabits blackwater and clearwater streams draining into the Essequibo, Corantijn, and Suriname systems. Its appeal lies in its warm, rosy body coloration and the bold white-tipped dorsal and anal fins that the males show off to each other with impressive flaring displays. A real highlight when you have a decent-sized group together. Speaking of groups, this is a species that genuinely needs company. A minimum of six fish is the baseline, but ten or more will produce noticeably better behavior, bolder movement, and those fin-flaring rivalries that make the fish worth watching in the first place. Being a gentle, small-bodied tetra, it pairs naturally with other South American community fish. Pencilfish, Corydoras, Apistogramma, and fellow Hyphessobrycon or Hemigrammus species all work well. Because of its relatively deep body shape, it can even share space with angelfish or discus without becoming an easy snack. It does best in soft, slightly acidic water that reflects its origins, though it tolerates a reasonable range. Worth noting: this species is frequently confused with the closely related H. bentosi. The key difference is a dark spot behind the gill cover in H. bentosi that H. rosaceus lacks entirely.
