Found in the upper Rio Negro basin of South America, Corydoras imitator gets its name from a genuinely fascinating ecological situation: several unrelated Corydoras species in this region share nearly identical color patterns, including a bold oblique dark bar across the dorsal surface, and naturally form large mixed schools together. The thinking is that more eyes and more bodies mean better predator detection, while each species still occupies its own feeding niche, often differentiated by snout length or mouth position. In the aquarium, imitator is a compact, peaceful catfish that does best in a group of at least six, and will readily mix with similarly sized, gentle tankmates. Like all callichthyid catfishes it carries bony armor plates instead of scales, and those stiffened pectoral spines deserve respect during handling since they can pierce skin and may carry mild venom from glands at the spine base. You will occasionally see them dart to the surface for a gulp of air, which is completely normal. They have a modified intestine capable of extracting oxygen directly from the atmosphere. A sand substrate is worth providing, both for their comfort and because fry raised over sand seem to fare better than those in bare tanks. Keep one at long enough and you may be surprised: this species can live well into its teens or even beyond.
