Kubota's clown loach (Botia kubotai) is a bottom-dweller from Myanmar, found in the Salween drainage system and related river basins. Its patterning is genuinely distinctive: young fish show three dark horizontal stripes and five dark bars that frame pairs of elongated yellow blotches, but as the fish matures those bars begin to break apart and fragment into smaller spots and streaks. This color-pattern shift, known as anastomosis, is common across the genus and can make identification tricky, especially with juveniles, which closely resemble young B. histrionica. Adults vary too, with some shipments producing darker fish with small spots and others showing lighter individuals with larger, oval markings. In the aquarium, these loaches are peaceful overall but can be boisterous enough to intimidate small or slow-moving tankmates, and long-finned fish are best avoided as fin-nipping is a real possibility. They are deeply social animals that must be kept in groups of at least five or six, and ideally more. Without sufficient company they can become withdrawn or even aggressive. Expect a rich group dynamic, including dominance displays where fish temporarily lose their color, shadowing behavior where juveniles mimic the movements of older individuals, and audible clicking sounds during moments of excitement. They will also rest wedged at odd angles in decor, which is completely normal. A forgiving choice for intermediate keepers who can meet their social and spatial needs.
