Boga Labeo (Labeo boga) is one of those species that turns up in the trade under some fairly dramatic trade names, 'violet-gilled shark' and 'blushing violet shark' among them, which gives you a sense of its visual appeal. It belongs to the sprawling genus Labeo, a group of over 100 species spread across Africa and Asia that taxonomists are still working to untangle. In fact, what we currently call L. boga may actually represent a cluster of closely related species rather than a single clean entity. In the wild, this fish lives in large South and Southeast Asian river systems, from Pakistan east through India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Myanmar, preferring the main channels and their tributaries well away from tidal zones. It spawns in flooded river conditions, suggesting it follows seasonal water cycles in nature. In the aquarium, the honest truth is that this species demands serious space, adults push close to a foot in length, and it carries a semi-aggressive streak, particularly toward other fish with a similar body shape. Tankmates and tank size need careful thought. That said, day-to-day care is not especially demanding, and a keeper who can provide the right footprint will find it manageable. It is available only sporadically in the hobby.
