Found across the Amazon, Essequibo, and Orinoco river basins of South America, this large pimelodid catfish, known commonly as the painted, saddle, or marbled sailfin catfish, is a species that demands serious thought before purchase. Leiarius pictus is perhaps best recognized by its oversized, sail-like dorsal fin, which is considerably more pronounced than in its closest relative and makes identification fairly straightforward even in young fish. It also carries an impressive set of extraordinarily long barbels that can move independently, which is one reason this fish needs more lateral space than most people anticipate. Restricted barbel movement is a genuine source of stress. Juveniles are sold regularly in the trade, often without adequate context about how fast and how large they grow. This is not a fish that adjusts its growth to fit its housing; it will push toward its full adult size regardless. While it will consume anything smaller that fits in its mouth, it can coexist with similarly large tankmates, big doradids, arowanas, large cichlids, provided the setup is close to public-aquarium scale. It is territorial toward its own kind and other large pimelodids. Those few keepers who can genuinely commit to housing this fish long-term will find a personable, intelligent catfish with real character.
