Found threading through the rivers and streams of Thailand's Chao Phraya, Mekong, and Maeklong basins, Leiocassis siamensis is a mid-sized catfish that brings a touch of wild Southeast Asia to a well-planned freshwater setup. In its natural habitat it feeds primarily on aquatic insect larvae, including dragonfly and damselfly nymphs, so in the aquarium it does best with meaty foods like bloodworms, chopped earthworms, and quality sinking carnivore pellets. It reaches somewhere between four and seven inches as an adult, making it a manageable but not tiny fish that deserves a decent footprint of tank space. Behaviorally it tends to be a calm, unhurried presence, more inclined to patrol the lower levels than to cause trouble, though its carnivorous nature means small tankmates that fit in its mouth are genuinely at risk. Pairing it with similarly sized, robust companions generally works well. It tolerates a fairly broad range of water conditions, which reflects the varied environments it occupies across its native range, but consistent water quality is still important for long-term health. This is a species suited to intermediate keepers who appreciate understated, purposeful fish rather than flashy showpieces.
