Lace Lettuce Coral (Leptoseris cailleti) is a Western Atlantic species found naturally in deeper reef zones, typically below 30 meters, where light levels are minimal and water movement is gentle. That natural preference for dim, calm conditions translates surprisingly well to the aquarium, making it one of the more approachable large-polyp stony corals for hobbyists who want something a little different in a low-light setup. The colony form is quite distinctive. It grows as flat, unifacial fronds that twist and contort as they develop, sometimes fusing together into irregular, layered shapes that look almost like crumpled fabric. The corallites, the individual polyp cups, run along the narrower ridges of the fronds or cluster across the broader sections, and they tilt outward at a noticeable angle rather than facing straight up. Coloration is a subdued pale brown, so this isn't a coral you'd choose for vivid color contrast. What it does offer is interesting sculptural form and a genuinely undemanding nature. It appreciates low flow and low light, and its tolerance of those conditions puts it within reach of newer reef keepers who are careful about placement. A coral with quiet character rather than flashy looks.
