Leucomelas (Corydoras leucomelas), also sold as the false spotted catfish, is one of the most abundant corydoras in its native Upper Amazon basin, which partly explains why it shows up so regularly in the hobby. Often tucked into mixed shipments of spotted cories alongside lookalikes like C. agassizii, C. ambiacus, and C. gomezi. Telling them apart takes a careful eye: leucomelas carries a distinct dark band through the eye that the others lack, and its dorsal fin marking extends down into the lower portion of the fin rather than being restricted to a small spot at the top. Like all callichthyids, the body is covered in bony plates rather than scales, giving it that characteristic armored look. One of the genuinely fascinating things about this fish is its ability to breathe atmospheric oxygen directly, using a specialized section of intestine. You will regularly see individuals dart to the surface for a quick gulp of air, which is completely normal. They can even tilt their eyes downward to inspect the substrate, which tends to surprise people the first time they see it. Keep them in groups of at least six; they are far more active and confident in numbers. Worth noting: the pectoral-fin spines can pierce skin and may carry mild toxins, so handle with care during maintenance. With good husbandry, these fish can live well beyond a decade.
