The lionhead goldfish (Carassius auratus var. lionhead) is one of the most recognizable fancy goldfish varieties, defined by the thick, warty growth of tissue that develops across the head and cheeks. A feature breeders call the wen. A product of centuries of selective breeding in East Asia, it has no wild population and exists purely as a cultivated form. Unlike slim-bodied goldfish, the lionhead carries a rounded, egg-shaped body and lacks a dorsal fin entirely, which gives it that signature hunched, lumbering silhouette. That body shape is charming but comes with tradeoffs: these fish are slow and poor swimmers, so keeping them with fast, competitive tankmates is a recipe for a hungry lionhead. They do best in groups of their own kind or with other similarly built fancy varieties. The wen continues developing as the fish matures, and on a well-kept specimen it can become quite elaborate. Though dense wen growth around the eyes occasionally causes vision problems in older fish, something worth monitoring. Diet matters here more than with hardier goldfish; high-quality sinking pellets and varied fresh foods help keep the wen healthy and the fish in good condition. With consistent water quality and attentive feeding, a lionhead can live well into its teens.
