Found on reef slopes across the Red Sea and down into East African waters, Litophyton viridis is a soft coral in the family Nephtheidae. A group sometimes called tree corals or cauliflower corals for the branching, arborescent shapes they develop when fully extended. In the aquarium, colonies expand into soft, bushy forms with polyps that give the branches a fuzzy texture when conditions are right. When flow drops or lighting shifts, the colony deflates noticeably, which can unsettle newer keepers, but this is completely normal behavior for nephtheids rather than a sign of trouble. Getting Litophyton viridis to thrive consistently does take some experience. These corals have a reputation for being finicky compared to leathery softcorals like Sarcophyton, and they can be slow to open and settle in after fragging or shipping stress. High, chaotic flow is genuinely important here. Laminar flow tends not to satisfy them the way turbulent, randomized water movement does. Lighting needs are moderate rather than intense. This is a reef-safe species that poses no meaningful threat to neighbors, but it benefits from some space to expand without being crowded. A solid intermediate-level choice for reefers ready to pay attention to flow dynamics.
