Brain Root Coral (Lobophyllia corymbosa) is a large, fleshy LPS coral found across a vast stretch of the Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa all the way out to Polynesia, and from Japan down to Australia. In the wild it grows on upper reef slopes at depths down to around 35 meters, forming flat to dome-shaped colonies with distinctly branching, finger-like lobes. Each branch typically housing one to three polyp centers. Most colonies stay under half a meter wide, though Red Sea specimens can be genuinely massive, sometimes exceeding two meters across. The calices are noticeably deep with thick, well-defined walls, and the septa are sturdy near the edges before thinning toward the center. Coloration tends toward earthy tones. Greenish brown, grey, and mustard shades are common, usually with lighter, paler centers that give the polyps a two-tone look. In the aquarium, this coral is a solid choice for newer reef keepers. It does well under moderate lighting and prefers gentle, low-flow conditions. Strong direct flow can stress the tissue over time. It is reef safe and generally peaceful, though like most LPS corals it should have adequate space from neighbors. Feed occasionally with meaty foods for best growth and color.
