The Loreto tetra (Hyphessobrycon loretoensis) is a small characin from the upper Amazon drainage in Peru, where it inhabits the soft, often tannin-stained waters typical of that region. Adults barely reach an inch in length, but what they lack in size they make up for in color. The caudal fin flushes a warm brick-red to orange-red that catches the light nicely when a group is moving together. The body also shows a dark lower flank and a horizontally elongated humeral spot, traits shared with several close relatives in the same species group. Most fish available in the hobby are wild-caught, so supply can be inconsistent depending on the season and collector activity. In the aquarium, Loreto tetras are thoroughly peaceful and do best in groups of eight or more, ideally a mix of males and females. They fit naturally alongside similarly sized characins, smaller catfishes, and non-aggressive cichlids. Keeping them in a larger school alongside other schooling species tends to bring out more relaxed, natural behavior. Breeding is achievable even for less experienced keepers. They scatter eggs freely and will occasionally produce fry in a mature, well-planted tank without much intervention. Overall this is a straightforward, rewarding species for anyone who enjoys small schooling tetras.
