Masked Puffer

The masked puffer (Arothron diadematus) is a chunky, characterful fish endemic to the Red Sea, where it patrols coral-rich fringing reefs. Its common name comes from the bold dark pigmentation around the eyes and mouth, giving the fish an unmistakable masked appearance against its lighter body. Like other members of the Arothron genus, it carries the classic puffer body plan, rounded, scaleless, and capable of inflating when threatened, and sports the powerful, fused beak-like teeth that this group is notorious for. Those teeth can make short work of coral, invertebrates, and pretty much anything else it decides to investigate, which is worth keeping in mind when planning tankmates or aquascaping. It is closely related to the widespread Indo-Pacific Arothron nigropunctatus, and the two are considered the same species by some researchers. In the aquarium, the masked puffer is an engaging, personable fish that tends to develop real character over time. Experienced keepers often describe puffers like this as some of the most interactive fish they have kept. That said, its appetite for invertebrates makes it a poor fit for reef tanks, and it needs a large, well-filtered system to thrive long term. A rewarding fish for the right setup.
