Nana Rasbora

A product of evolutionary miniaturisation, Microdevario nanus is one of those species that makes you do a double-take at the tank. Adults top out well under an inch, yet they carry themselves with the confidence of much larger fish. In the trade it circulates under informal names like nana rasbora or green dwarf rasbora. The quickest way to identify it among its close relatives is the neat black blotch at the tip of the dorsal fin, paired with a softer greyish mark at the anal fin tip. No other Microdevario carries that same combination. In the wild it is currently known only from Myanmar, likely associated with the Irrawaddy delta, where it probably inhabits slow or still water. The kind of quiet, often vegetation-choked habitat that miniaturised cyprinids seem to gravitate toward throughout Asia. In the aquarium it is entirely peaceful, but its small size means tankmates should be chosen with care. Other Myanmar dwarfs make obvious companions, and keeping a group of at least eight to ten individuals is genuinely important here. It calms the fish, brings out natural schooling behaviour, and pushes males into showing their best colours as they posture for females. A mature planted tank suits it well, and its forgiving nature makes it a reasonable choice for newer keepers willing to think small.
