The yellow-banded moenkhausia (Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae) is a widely available South American tetra that turns up in most fish shops, and for good reason. It's hardy, adaptable, and brings genuine energy to a community setup. In the wild it ranges across several major river basins in central and eastern South America, including the Paraguay, Uruguay, upper Parana, and São Francisco systems. The body is silvery with a bold red patch in the upper portion of the eye and a dark spot at the base of the tail, giving it a clean, classic tetra look. Most specimens sold in the hobby are captive-bred, which means they've lost any fussiness about water chemistry that wild-caught fish might carry. Behaviorally, this species does best in groups of at least six to eight individuals. Kept in smaller numbers it gets skittish and is more likely to pester tankmates by nipping at flowing fins. In a proper shoal that energy tends to stay directed inward, and the group dynamic is far more settled. It's an active fish, so calm or slow-moving species like bettas or dwarf cichlids can find it stressful company. Better choices for tankmates are similarly lively fish. Other tetras, barbs, rainbowfish, and active bottom-dwellers like corydoras. In the right setup it's a genuinely forgiving choice, though managing its social needs puts it at intermediate rather than beginner level.
