The Molly Miller (Scartella cristata) is a small, hardy blenny with one of the more distinctive silhouettes in the saltwater hobby. That erectile nuchal crest running along the top of the head gives it a punk-rock look that makes it easy to pick out of a crowd. Found across a remarkably wide range that spans both the Western and Eastern Atlantic, from Bermuda and Florida down to Brazil on one side of the ocean, and from the Canary Islands to South Africa on the other, this is a species thoroughly comfortable in shallow, wave-swept rocky habitats and tide pools. In the wild, adults tuck into empty queen conch shells, rock crevices, and algae mats. And they'll behave much the same way in an aquarium, appreciating plenty of rockwork with nooks to claim as their own. Their diet shifts as they age, with juveniles focusing on small invertebrates and adults leaning heavily toward grazing algae, which makes mature Molly Millers useful allies in keeping nuisance algae in check. Temperamentally they're peaceful toward most tankmates, and their straightforward care needs make them a reasonable choice for hobbyists who are still building experience with marine setups. With a lifespan stretching close to a decade, this is a fish you can genuinely get to know.
