24-Karat Molly Molly
Poecilia sphenops
About this strain
An intensified gold strain where the entire body — including the belly and fins — is saturated with deep, solid gold coloration rather than the scattered flecking of Gold Dust. Think of it as Gold Dust turned up to maximum saturation with less white showing through. The fins often carry a yellow-gold tint as well, giving the fish a remarkably unified look. Color can fade quickly in suboptimal conditions, so consistent water quality and a varied diet are important for maintaining that rich gold. Males in breeding condition are especially vivid. This variety requires a bit more attention to diet than hardier mollies.
Origin
A further selection of the gold molly line, developed primarily in Southeast Asian commercial facilities during the late 1990s and 2000s to maximize uniform golden pigmentation. Specific originator is unclear.
