About this strain
Bold, high-contrast patterning with large, well-defined patches of black and white — more graphic and blocky than the Marble Molly's swirling blends, and typically with a more predictable two-tone layout. The name references the theatrical costume, and a well-patterned Harlequin really does look like it's wearing one. Coloration should be crisp with no blurring at the patch borders; faded or blotchy patterning is a sign of stress or diluted genetics. Relatively peaceful and suitable for community tanks. Because the name is used inconsistently in the hobby, sometimes applied to heavily-patterned Dalmatians, inspect before buying.
Origin
A selectively bred strain with origins in commercial aquaculture, primarily Southeast Asian farms, that gained hobby recognition in the 2000s. Precise provenance is disputed and the name is not always applied consistently in the trade.
