Found in the Mekong, Chao Phraya, and Maeklong river systems of Southeast Asia, Mystus mysticetus is a small bagrid catfish with one genuinely unusual distinction: it is the only member of its genus whose eyes sit on the sides of the head rather than in the typical dorsolateral position. That alone makes it worth a second look. In the wild, this species forms mixed schools alongside its close relative M. multiradiatus, the groups congregating around submerged wood and other hard surfaces to browse for zooplankton, aquatic insects, small crustaceans, and rotifers. During the rainy season they push into flooded forest habitat, retreating back to the main river channels as water levels drop in late November and December. In the aquarium it carries that same social tendency well. Keep it in a small group and pair it with larger peaceful tankmates like sizable barbs, rasboras, or calm cichlids. That said, adults may make a meal of very small fish, so tiny nano species are better kept elsewhere. Breeding has not been documented in captivity. It is an intermediate-level species that rewards keepers who give it company, decent cover, and appropriate tankmates, and it remains genuinely underappreciated given how well it fits into a larger community setup.
