Nemacheilus guentheri

Found in rocky, fast-moving streams across Peninsular India, this small nemacheilid loach, Mesonoemacheilus guentheri, belongs to a genus entirely endemic to rivers draining the Western Ghats. It is patterned with rows of yellowish, dark-edged rounded spots along the flanks, which can cause confusion with the closely related M. herrei. Though careful attention to fin proportions, caudal peduncle shape, and lateral line continuity will separate them. In the trade it more often arrives as bycatch in shipments of M. triangularis than as a deliberate import, though specialist retailers do stock it from time to time. What makes this fish genuinely interesting to keep is its behavioral unpredictability. Some hobbyists find it perfectly peaceful in a community setting, while others report real territorial aggression. And nobody has fully worked out why. Environmental setup seems to play a role, with sparse, bare tanks apparently reducing combative behavior in at least some individuals. Keeping a group of four or more is generally the better approach, since wild populations appear to live in large aggregations. Robust, open-water cyprinids make the safest tankmates, while delicate bottom-dwellers and similarly-shaped loach relatives are best avoided unless the tank is particularly spacious. Breeding has not been documented for this species specifically, though a congener was successfully spawned in captivity.
