Blind Cave Loach

Found only in the underground stream system of Tham Sai Yok Noi in western Thailand, Nemacheilus troglocataractus is one of a small number of blind loaches endemic to Thai cave systems. This species is fully troglomorphic. Virtually all known individuals lack externally visible eyes entirely, and their bodies show no pigmentation whatsoever, presenting a ghostly pale appearance. In the wild they cling to rocks in fast-moving, well-oxygenated water or drift through shallow gravel pools, picking at benthic microorganisms. When two individuals meet, things can turn confrontational quickly. The dominant fish will adopt a rapid zig-zag swimming pattern and may resort to lateral shoving and biting against rivals, so the species is decidedly territorial even at small sizes. Breeding has never been documented in captivity, though cave fish as a group tend toward producing fewer, larger eggs that hatch as comparatively developed fry. A sensible adaptation when food is scarce and space is limited. It's important to be clear: this species is fully protected under Thai national law and cannot legally be collected from its habitat. It is included here purely as a point of interest for hobbyists curious about cave-adapted fishes, not as any kind of recommendation for aquarium keeping.
