Threadfin Anthias (Nemanthias carberryi) is a small but lively fish from the western Indian Ocean, ranging across a broad stretch of territory that takes in the Maldives to the east and stretches as far south as South Africa. In the wild, individuals gather in social groups along exposed outer reef slopes, and that gregarious nature carries right into the aquarium. Keeping them in a group is the way to go if you want to see natural behavior. The threadfin part of the name refers to the elongated fin rays that give this species its distinctive silhouette and help distinguish it from other anthias. Despite its somewhat delicate appearance, this fish is not a pushover. It holds its ground confidently among similarly sized or peaceful tankmates, though it will become withdrawn and stressed when kept alongside genuinely aggressive species. That temperament label of aggressive in the care sheets refers more to its own assertiveness within a group than outright hostility. Social dynamics within a school can get spicy, which is worth keeping in mind when stocking. As a carnivore, it needs regular meaty feedings to thrive, and its intermediate care rating means it suits keepers who already have some reef experience under their belt.
