Ansorge's Characin (Neolebias ansorgii) is one of those fish that tends to get passed over at the shop, often looking washed-out and unremarkable under bright store lighting. Give it the right setup, though, and it transforms into something genuinely worth seeking out. This small African characin comes from a broad swath of West and Central Africa, ranging from the Niger delta through parts of Nigeria, Benin, Cameroon, Gabon, and down toward the lower Congo River system, where it inhabits soft, acidic, heavily vegetated waters. Adults stay quite small, rarely exceeding an inch and a half, and they carry themselves with the quiet, slightly nervous energy you'd expect from a fish that evolved as prey as much as predator. In the wild it picks at worms, small crustaceans, and insects, and it takes readily to similar foods in captivity. Because it's genuinely shy, Ansorge's Characin does best in a species-only setup or alongside very small, calm companions. Boisterous tankmates will push it into hiding and you'll rarely see it. Keep a proper school in a planted aquarium with subdued lighting and soft, acidic water, and the fish will settle, show its true colors, and become surprisingly active. Breeding is possible but rarely achieved, making successfully spawning it a real point of pride. An intermediate-level species that's definitely underappreciated.
