Found in the Paraguay River basin of South America, Odontostilbe kriegi is a compact characid that stays on the smaller end of the tetra world, typically reaching around an inch or so in adult length. It is a shoaling species through and through, spending most of its time cruising the middle layers of the water column in loose, coordinated groups. Like many of its relatives, it reproduces by forming distinct pairs during spawning, which can make breeding attempts in a well-set-up tank an interesting project for patient keepers. In terms of temperament, it is about as easygoing as a fish gets. Peaceful with tankmates and unlikely to cause any trouble in a community setup. That said, it does best when kept in a proper school rather than just a handful of individuals, and a group will look and behave far more naturally than a lone specimen or a pair. The care level sits at intermediate, largely because this species appreciates stable, well-maintained water conditions rather than because it presents any dramatic challenge. If you enjoy smaller South American characins and want something a little off the beaten path compared to the usual tetra options, this is a species worth tracking down.
