The redtooth triggerfish (Odonus niger) is one of those fish that immediately makes you do a double-take. Despite the common name "Blue Triggerfish" circulating in some circles, the most distinctive feature is actually those vivid red teeth, which stand out sharply against a deep blue-to-teal body that shifts in shade depending on the light. Found across a wide sweep of the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea to the Society Islands, this species lives out in the open water column along current-swept reef slopes and channels rather than hiding in the rockwork. In the wild they gather in large schools to pick off zooplankton drifting by on the current, which is somewhat at odds with how they tend to behave in a home aquarium. Once confined to a tank, the schooling instinct gives way to a strongly territorial streak, and they will readily intimidate or harass fish that share their space. They also produce audible grunting sounds, which catches new owners off guard the first time. For a triggerfish, the care demands are relatively manageable, but you need serious tank volume to house one comfortably, and thoughtful tankmate selection is non-negotiable. Juveniles tend to shelter near rubble patches, so providing plenty of structure helps them settle in.
