The orange-striped shrimpgoby (Stonogobiops yasha) is one of the more charming examples of symbiosis you can keep in a home reef. In the wild, this small goby lives along the outer reef slope, hovering just above sandy substrate near the entrance to a burrow it shares with Alpheus randalli, a red-and-white barred pistol shrimp. The arrangement is a classic partnership. The shrimp does the digging and housekeeping while the goby keeps watch, darting into the burrow at the first sign of trouble and taking the shrimp with it. Visually, yasha is a clean, pale fish marked with bold orange-red horizontal banding and an elongated first dorsal spine that gives it a slightly dramatic silhouette for its size. It stays small even at full adult size, so it fits comfortably into a modestly sized system provided there's a sandy bottom for burrowing. The best way to keep it is paired with its natural shrimp partner, and many hobbyists find the pair's interactions to be genuinely engaging to watch. It's not a beginner fish, mostly because it can be shy and may refuse food early on, but with patience it settles in well and proves quite hardy.
