The Palespotted Corydoras (Corydoras gossei) is a small armored catfish from the Mamoré River basin of Brazil and Bolivia, where it shares its range with similarly patterned relatives including the closely related Corydoras seussi. The two can be told apart by snout shape. C. gossei has a shorter, rounder snout. Though a third variant known in the hobby as CW069 muddies the waters further. Like all members of the family Callichthyidae, it wears bony plates instead of scales, giving it that characteristic armored look. One of the more unusual things about this fish is its ability to gulp air at the surface, using a modified, well-vascularized section of intestine to extract oxygen. Handy in the low-oxygen waters it sometimes inhabits in the wild. You'll see this in the aquarium too, and it's perfectly normal. Worth noting: those stiffened pectoral spines can pierce skin and may carry mild toxins, so be careful when netting or handling them. Behaviorally, C. gossei is sociable and should be kept in groups of at least four to six. It's a peaceful community fish that pairs well with other non-aggressive species. Breeding is achievable but requires some patience and attention to water quality, putting it comfortably in the intermediate care bracket. With proper conditions, these little catfish can live remarkably long lives.
