Found tumbling through the clear, fast-moving hill streams of India's Western Ghats, Haludaria melanampyx is a compact barb native to a remarkably specific stretch of southwestern India. From Goa and south Canara down through the Travancore hills to Nagercoil, including the Nilgiris and the Cauvery drainage. That origin tells you a lot about what it needs: clean, well-oxygenated water with decent flow, not the sluggish, warm conditions you'd set up for a lot of community fish. The species sits somewhere in the small-to-mid barb range, with adults varying noticeably in size depending on conditions. Given the relatively limited information available on this species in the hobby, much of what we can say draws on what's typical for hill-stream barbs from this region generally. They tend to be active, social swimmers that do best in groups, and a spacious tank with some current and good filtration suits them well. The intermediate care rating reflects that they're not especially forgiving of poor water quality. The clean streams they come from set a high bar. If you can meet those baseline conditions, this is a rewarding and little-known representative of one of the world's most biodiverse freshwater regions.
