Pearlscale Goldfish
Carassius auratus var. pearlscale
The round, jewel-scaled fancy goldfish that looks almost too spherical to be real.

About
The pearlscale goldfish (Carassius auratus var. pearlscale) is one of the most recognizable fancy goldfish varieties out there, and also one of the most debated among keepers who appreciate form alongside function. The body is famously round, almost perfectly globe-shaped, and each scale has a raised, domed center that catches light in a way that genuinely resembles a pearl necklace draped across the fish. Coloration varies widely across the variety, running through oranges, reds, whites, calicos, and combinations of all of these. Like all fancy goldfish, pearlscales are a product of centuries of selective breeding in East Asia and have no wild counterpart. That round body isn't just cosmetic. It compresses the internal organs, which makes these fish more sensitive to digestive problems than slim-bodied goldfish relatives. A quality diet with plenty of variety, portions kept moderate, and good filtration go a long way toward keeping them healthy over what can be a genuinely long lifespan. Their swimming is slow and a little wobbly, which means they should never be housed with faster fish that might outcompete them for food. Peaceful by nature, they do well in groups with other fancy varieties of similar build.
