Burmese Bumble-bee Barb

Found in the trade under the label Pethia sp. myanmar, this small barb is an undescribed species that has regularly been confused with and sold as Pethia tiantian, the Burmese bumble-bee barb. Its exact collection locality is unconfirmed, though it is understood to originate from northern Myanmar. As a member of the genus Pethia, a group split out from the old catch-all Puntius in 2012, it shares the defining traits of that assemblage: no rostral barbels, a stiffened serrated last dorsal-fin ray, and characteristic black markings on the caudal peduncle and body flanks. Adults stay small, reaching just over two inches, which makes them well suited to modestly sized planted setups. Temperament is reliably peaceful, and this species genuinely benefits from being kept in a group of eight or more individuals, ideally with both sexes represented. Rival males will posture and display to one another, showing their best coloration in the process. It is one of the more entertaining things to watch in a community tank. Pairing them with other small schooling species adds to the sense of security and encourages more confident, natural behavior. Breeding has not been documented in the hobby as yet. Overall this is a beginner-friendly fish with an interesting taxonomic backstory still waiting to be fully resolved.
