The Burmese Bumblebee Barb (Pethia tiantian) is a small cyprinid from narrow, fast-moving hill streams in northern Myanmar, where water flows over mixed substrates of rock, gravel, and sand beneath low-canopy forest. Adults carry a distinctive pattern shared by several close relatives, a dark vertical bar toward the front of the body and a rounder blotch on the caudal peduncle, but can be told apart from lookalikes like P. cumingii and P. didi by a complete lateral line running all the way to the tail base, a slimmer body profile, and subtle differences in fin markings. Worth noting: an undescribed fish is sometimes sold under this name, so sourcing from reputable suppliers matters. In the aquarium, this species is peaceful and genuinely sociable. Keeping a mixed-sex group of eight to ten individuals brings out the best behavior, as rival males display intensely to one another and to females, showing off their colors in ways a smaller group simply won't replicate. It fits naturally alongside other fish from the Ayeyarwady basin. Danios, devarios, and smaller loaches all make compatible tankmates. Breeding follows the typical egg-scattering pattern of small cyprinids, with no parental care, and the adults will readily consume their own eggs if given the chance. An intermediate-level species that rewards a little extra attention to group size and tankmate selection.
