Found in the river systems of the Amazon basin, Platystomatichthys sturio is an unusual-looking catfish that stands out for its distinctly elongated snout and sturdy build, growing to somewhere between roughly ten and sixteen inches as an adult. It belongs to the family Pimelodidae, and like many of its relatives it carries an almost prehistoric silhouette that makes it an interesting centerpiece for a large freshwater setup. Despite being labeled a beginner-friendly species, there is one important behavioral quirk every keeper needs to know about: this fish spooks easily, and when it panics it can throw itself against tank walls or décor with enough force to cause real injury. Smooth tankmates, plenty of cover, and a calm environment go a long way toward keeping it settled. Ideally the aquarium should be spacious enough to give this fish room to move without feeling cornered. A species that can live twelve to fourteen years deserves a setup that takes its long-term wellbeing seriously. It is an omnivore and is not particularly demanding about food. The main challenge with this catfish is simply managing its nervous temperament, which is something experienced keepers handle well but newer hobbyists should research before committing.
