One-stripe Anthias

The one-stripe anthias (Pseudanthias fasciatus) is one of the more unusual members of a family already full of characters. Native to the Indo-Pacific, with a range stretching from the Red Sea across to southern Japan and down to the Great Barrier Reef, and more recently documented as far east as Tonga, this species is a creature of the reef's shadowy edges. In the wild it haunts caves, overhangs, and the lips of seaward reef walls, and it has a genuinely remarkable habit: adults routinely swim upside-down along cave ceilings, treating the roof as the floor. That behavior alone makes it one of the more conversation-worthy fish you can keep. Compared to the schooling anthias most hobbyists encounter, this species tends to be solitary or found in small groups, which gives it a slightly different energy in the aquarium. Less frenetic, more deliberate. It grows respectably large for an anthias, and its size and care demands put it firmly in intermediate territory rather than beginner. Providing plenty of cave structure and overhangs isn't just decorating preference here. It's genuinely what this fish is built for, and a well-aquascaped tank will bring out its natural behaviors far better than an open, sparse setup.
