The yellowstriped fairy basslet (Pseudanthias tuka) is one of the more visually arresting anthias you'll encounter in the saltwater hobby, with males displaying rich violet-purple bodies set off by a vivid yellow stripe running along the dorsal area. Females tend toward a softer, more muted coloration, as is typical across the genus. In the wild this species ranges broadly across the Indo-West Pacific, from Mauritius and the Philippines through Indonesia and out to the Solomon Islands, with populations also recorded around Palau and as far north as southern Japan. Out on the reef, these fish gather in sometimes large aggregations along outer slopes and drop-offs, often at considerable depth, picking planktonic crustaceans and fish eggs from the water column as it sweeps past. In the aquarium, the yellowstriped fairy basslet is docile and generally gets along well with other peaceful tankmates. It's one of the more approachable anthias for hobbyists stepping into the genus for the first time. Like most anthias, it does best when kept in a group with one dominant male, and it needs a large, well-established system with reliable flow and consistent feeding to really settle in and thrive long-term.
