The Nyassa Blue Cichlid (Pseudotropheus zebra) is one of the most recognizable mbuna cichlids in the hobby, hailing from the rocky shorelines of Lake Malawi in east Africa, including the islands of Likoma and Chizumulu. In the wild it occupies both shallow, sediment-free boulder zones and slightly deeper areas where organic material accumulates, and it feeds by grazing at an angle against surfaces to pick loose matter from the biofilm layer, supplementing that diet with open-water plankton when the opportunity arises. That omnivorous approach translates well to aquarium life, where it will accept a wide variety of prepared and fresh foods without much fuss. Males typically display bold blue barring that gives the species its zebra association, though coloration varies considerably across wild populations and captive-bred forms. Despite being listed as peaceful in some references, it carries the typical mbuna temperament underneath that label. Territorial squabbles are normal, especially in cramped conditions or when males outnumber females. Keeping a single male with multiple females, and providing plenty of rockwork for sight-line breaks, goes a long way toward a calmer tank. Overall this is a reasonable starting point for anyone wanting to explore the African rift lake cichlids, with a manageable adult size and solid hardiness once water quality is maintained consistently.
