Puffer fish (Tetraodon pustulatus) is one of the lesser-known African puffers, and one of the most substantial freshwater puffers you're likely to encounter in the hobby. Adults can reach well over a foot in length, making this a genuinely large fish that demands a serious setup. It's endemic to the Cross River system spanning Nigeria and Cameroon, where both juveniles and adults are found throughout the main river channel. Like other puffers, it can inflate its body into a near-spherical shape thanks to a specialized connection between a ventral pocket, the gill chamber, and the esophagus. A defense mechanism that's as impressive in a home aquarium as it is in the wild. The liver and reproductive organs are toxic, which is worth knowing even if it's more of a biological curiosity than a practical concern for fishkeepers. There's also some taxonomic murkiness worth noting: a handful of older literature records may have confused this species with Tetraodon guttifer. As a carnivore with a sizeable adult size and a lifespan that can stretch well beyond a decade, this isn't a casual purchase. It rewards patient, committed keepers who can provide the space and diet variety it genuinely needs.
