Found in the Purus River basin of Brazil, this small armored catfish, Corydoras pulcher, is one of the more obscure members of a genus that has captivated fishkeepers for generations. Like its relatives, it wears two rows of bony plates instead of scales, giving it a distinctive tank-like profile. One of the more unusual traits of this fish is its ability to gulp air directly from the surface, using the stomach lining to absorb oxygen. A normal behavior shared across the Corydoras group, though it does mean you'll want at least a couple of inches of clearance between the waterline and any hood to prevent the fish from bumping itself during those quick surface dashes. Perhaps the most charming quirk is the ability to tilt its eye downward to inspect the substrate below, giving the impression that it's actually blinking. Something that never fails to surprise people seeing it for the first time. This is a genuinely social fish that does best in groups, and the more you keep, the more confident and active they become. With a potential lifespan stretching into the teens and beyond, this is a long-term commitment rather than a casual addition. Care level is intermediate, making it a solid choice for keepers who already have some experience managing soft, clean bottom conditions.
