The red side barb (Puntius bimaculatus) is a small, lively cyprinid native to the hill streams, lowland wetlands, and river systems of India and Sri Lanka. Males in good condition develop a broad reddish stripe along the flanks, and the species can be identified by a dark spot at the base of the dorsal fin and another at the caudal peduncle. A combination of markings that sets it apart from similar South Asian barbs. In the wild it feeds heavily on algae and organic detritus, so it will readily accept most prepared foods in the aquarium. Its temperament is genuinely peaceful, making it a comfortable fit in community tanks alongside other small cyprinids, tetras, livebearers, rainbowfishes, anabantoids, and bottom dwellers like loaches and catfish. This is a true schooling fish, and keeping a group of at least six to ten individuals makes a real difference. The fish settle down, behave more naturally, and the males push each other to show their best color. Breeding follows the typical egg-scattering pattern of the group, with no parental care, and adults will consume their own eggs if given the chance. Getting the best results from spawning takes a bit of setup and planning, putting this species in the intermediate care bracket rather than as a beginner's choice.
