The Mahecola Barb (Puntius mahecola) is a modest-sized cyprinid from the rivers of Kerala in southwestern India, where it favors slow-moving stretches over sandy and muddy substrates in shallow water. In terms of looks it is relatively understated compared to many of its barb cousins. The body is plain-colored with a single horizontally elongated dark blotch on the caudal peduncle, a marking that can fade almost completely depending on the fish's mood and condition. A small pair of maxillary barbels is present, helping to distinguish it from superficially similar species. One thing worth knowing before buying is that this fish has a tangled taxonomic history: members of the genus Dawkinsia have been sold under the name 'Mahecola Barb' for decades, so it pays to do a bit of research before purchasing to confirm you're getting the genuine article. In the aquarium it is a relaxed, undemanding fish that fits naturally into a community setup with tetras, livebearers, small catfishes, loaches, and other peaceful cyprinids. It places no particular demands on water chemistry, making it a reasonable choice for less experienced keepers. Being a schooling species, it really should be kept in groups of eight or more. A larger group reduces skittishness and brings out the best coloration in males as they display to one another.
