Found only in the Tambraparni River basin of southern India, this medium-sized barb has a complicated identity on the trade. It circulates under the names Puntius tambraparniei and Dawksinia tambraparniei and is frequently sold simply as the 'arulius barb', a label that more accurately belongs to a different and rarely exported species. Adult males develop elongated filamentous extensions on the dorsal fin rays, which is one of the cleaner ways to tell this fish apart from its close relatives. Body markings are diffuse and bold, with dark blotches along the flank and a characteristic elongated blotch on the caudal peduncle. This is an active, schooling species and really should be kept in groups of eight or more. Fewer fish tend to be skittish, while a proper school settles down, looks far more natural, and channels any male rivalry into internal posturing rather than bothering tankmates. It fits well in a peaceful community alongside other riverine cyprinids and loaches of comparable size, provided tankmates are confident enough to hold their own next to an energetic fish of this size. Breeding follows the typical egg-scattering pattern common to the family, and given good conditioning, spawning happens readily. Overall this is a manageable species for a beginner willing to commit to the group size it needs.
