San Francisco Piranha

Found only in the São Francisco River basin of Brazil, the San Francisco piranha (Pygocentrus piraya) is the biggest member of its genus and one of the most recognizable predatory fish in the freshwater hobby. Adults develop a robust, deep-bodied profile and carry vivid yellow-orange pigmentation across the lower jaw, gill cover, and flanks. A color pattern that helps separate this species from its close relatives. Unlike most piranhas that circulate through the trade, this one is banned from import in several countries, so check local regulations before seeking one out. In the aquarium, it is best kept alone. Well-fed adults may tolerate much smaller tank mates, but housing multiple individuals together demands an exceptionally large system, and even then aggression between adults can be severe. Despite the fearsome reputation that piranhas carry in popular culture, there is no documented case of wild piranhas killing a person, and that mythology applies to the whole genus. Breeding has not been recorded in captivity, though wild populations likely follow seasonal spawning cycles tied to rising water levels and flooding of marginal vegetation, similar to the pattern seen in the red-bellied piranha. Care level is listed as beginner, but responsible ownership means taking the size, legal status, and solo-keeping requirements seriously from the start.
