About
Big-eyes (Pseudomugil sp. red neon) is a miniature rainbowfish relative that arrived in the hobby only in 2011 and has circulated under a string of trade names ever since, including 'red orange neon' and 'neon orange'. DNA work has confirmed it is an undescribed species distinct from the similar P. paskai, though its wild origin remains genuinely unknown. Which is a rarity for any fish now sold commercially. Males are the showstoppers, developing vivid coloration and engaging in elaborate rivalry displays when competing for female attention, behavior that only really comes through in a proper group. Keep at least eight to ten together, ideally more, and you will see a level of activity and color intensity that a pair or trio simply cannot deliver. Despite the beginner-friendly care rating, this species is easily outpaced and outcompeted in a mixed community, so it does best in a dedicated setup alongside similarly sized peaceful companions or small Caridina and Neocaridina shrimp. Dense planting helps enormously, both for the fish's comfort and for the survival of any fry that happen to make it past the adults. Breeding is achievable but requires attention. Eggs and young are vulnerable, and water quality in rearing containers needs to stay consistently fresh. For a keeper who enjoys observing natural fish behavior up close, this little species is genuinely rewarding.
