The Silver Prochilodus (Semaprochilodus taeniurus) is one of those species that rewards a curious keeper with a fascinating natural history behind a relatively straightforward fish to keep. Native to the central Amazon basin and its tributary rivers, this species is among the most ecologically significant shoaling fish in South America, undertaking twice-yearly migrations across hundreds of kilometers. At times even leaping through rapids in a manner reminiscent of salmon. In the wild it feeds primarily on organic detritus and sediment, and it has actually evolved a second stomach partly filled with mud to assist in processing all that material. In the aquarium it readily accepts a herbivore-appropriate diet. Appearance-wise, S. taeniurus is distinguishable from its close relative S. insignis by persistent dark spots along the flanks that remain visible into adulthood rather than fading as the fish matures. Behaviorally it is generally peaceful with medium to large tankmates. Larger characins, loricariids, doradids, knifefish, and peaceful cichlids all make reasonable companions. Where it gets tricky is with its own kind: small groups bring out territorial tendencies, so it is best kept either solo or in a group of six or more in a genuinely spacious setup. Breeding has never been achieved in captivity, likely because its spawning cycle is so deeply tied to seasonal flood migrations in the wild.
