Brandt's Pirambeba

Brandt's pirambeba (Serrasalmus brandtii) is a solo act. This is a fish you keep as a single specimen, full stop. It hails from the São Francisco River basin in Brazil, one of the few Serrasalmus species tied to that particular drainage, and it shows up only occasionally in the aquarium hobby. Adults develop a warm golden-bronze coloration with reflective scales along the flanks, dark fin margins, and reddish or yellowish tones through much of the fin tissue. The base of the caudal fin is noticeably dark, and the upper head profile has a distinctive concave dip above the eye. A subtle but useful ID feature once you know to look for it. Juveniles look quite different, carrying dark body spots and largely transparent fins, so younger fish can be tricky to pin down. Like all members of family Serrasalmidae, this species has the hallmark compressed body and serrated ventral keel of the group. It's a carnivore, armed with a single row of sharp tricuspid teeth on each jaw. Breeding has never been documented in captivity, though wild fish apparently spawn throughout the year with activity peaking in the wet season. Despite being labeled beginner-level for care, the single-specimen requirement and long lifespan mean you're committing to this fish for a long time.
