The pinch piranha (Serrasalmus eigenmanni) is one of the more accessible members of a group that tends to carry a lot of cultural baggage. Native to the Amazon River basin and the river systems draining the northern and eastern Guiana Shield, this species occupies a range of blackwater and clearwater environments across South America. Like most serrasalmids, it has the laterally compressed, deep-bodied profile that defines the group, along with the notoriously sharp dentition piranhas are known for. Serrasalmus eigenmanni is a solitary predator by nature, and unlike the social red-bellied piranha, it is best kept alone. Mixing it with conspecifics or similarly shaped fish is a reliable recipe for missing fins and worse. That said, it is listed as a beginner-appropriate species, which may surprise people who assume all piranhas demand expert handling. The real keys are providing enough space, feeding a varied carnivore diet, and respecting the fact that this fish has absolutely no fear during feeding time. Hands in the tank should always be approached with care. For someone who has been curious about keeping a piranha but wanted to start with something a little more forgiving, this species is a reasonable entry point into the group.
